MARGARET PITT PRINTMAKER

Margaret C.C. Pitt graduated with Honours in Fine Art - Printmaking Gray's School of Art, The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen in 2003. Since graduating Margaret has continued to produce and show work in galleries in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Crieff, Ballater, Banchory, Stonehaven and St. Andrews in group and solo shows. Her work has also in the collections of several businesses. Her studio is open to the public by appointment and she runs workshops in woodcut printmaking for small groups.

Archaeological images are frequently the reference for the mainly woodcut prints. This technique is one of the oldest forms of relief printing and thus appropriate to the subject matter.Archeological sites in her native Shetland, Orkney and mainland Scotland provide their distinctive shapes and use is made of plan sections, details of construction and artefacts. Small sections are explored and expanded to give the abstract forms which are a feature of the work. A recent visit to Cyprus is the subject of her latest work and Margaret has also been making some prints based on mountain scenery.

Colour plays an important role and, with the texture provided by the wood itself together with the cuts and lines, there are several layers to give depth to the prints. Margaret uses the reductive method to produce her prints which are , therefore, not able to be reproduced since the wood block is cut away between layers and there is very little of the surface left at the end of the process. Sometimes there will be a very limited number of prints of the same design in a variety of colours and several of the recent works are limited edition prints with an edition of six. These are the Cyprus prints and the mountain images.
